Overview

At the direction of the Director of Quality, Informatics and Education, function as a clinical system expert to collaborate with clinical areas and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate and provide education, training, and project management for clinical systems (planning, implementation and evaluation), Participate as an active and collaborative member of the clinical informatics team striving for clinical excellence by maintaining established standards of care and practice through direct patient care, clinical systems improvement activities, and staff education.

Responsibilities

  • Act as an expert in human factors, patient safety, and the use of technology to optimize care delivery processes and effectively communicate patient care activity.
  • Specialize in patient care processes and clinician workflow and leads initiatives to promote effective process design, development, and implementation of theElectronic Medical Record and other technologies.
  • Assume responsibility for assuring clinician involvement in evaluation of new technology design and function.
  • Support physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinicians as the resource for requests related to technology changes.
  • Demonstrate independent decision making as appropriate in evaluation of requests for system improvements and determines feasibility and advisability of system changes.
  • Work closely with clinicians, departmental leadership, Quality, and Information Systems staff to clarify needs, prioritize requests, recommend technology design, workflow and execute change and adaptation to the EMR and other technology.
  • Responsible for order set management:

    - Development and maintenance of overall principles for safe design and use of order sets, with a focus on workflow design;

    - Development and maintenance of standard order set clinical content;

    - Identified leader as resource for requests for changes, additional orders and order sets;

    - Collaborate with clinicians to develop order sets based on order set standards, patient safety principles, and evidence based practice guidelines.

  • Responsible as a thought leader for maximizing technology design to achieve the best clinical outcomes and leads the organization's approach to clinical documentation in collaboration with the Clinical informatics Committee.

  • Participate in improvement projects and on assigned committees to provide content expertise on the literature related to the use of the EMR, Barcode Point of Care and other technology to meet patient safety goals, support clinician workflow, and achieve care improvements.

  • Act as a thought leader and resource for clinicians on the clinical information system and patient care processes to promote optimal care, reduce errors, and achieve organizational goals.

  • Participate in development, monitoring and evaluation of technology and decision support (barcode point of care, rules, order sets, etc.) for continuous improvement.

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate clinician functional testing for human factors issues before and after system upgrades and improvements.

  • Problem solve application and workflow issues and work through barriers to achieve results by collaborating effectively with users and the Information Technology staff.

  • Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare delivery team.

  • Assume accountability for measurable improvements in clinician satisfaction with technology, and in the use of technology as a facilitator of best practices, patient safety, and error avoidance.

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • BSN, Education and or experience in the use of information systems is essential.
  • MS degree in Nursing or health care informatics related program preferred.
  • 3 - 5 years hospital-based clinical RN experience, and 1-2 years experience in expanded nursing role.
  • Extensive knowledge of Clinical Informatics, project development and implementation.
  • VT RN licensure required.
