The Nurse Director is a registered nurse who has 24-hour accountability and responsibility for the operation of departments and or services. These responsibilities include providing excellence and quality in patient care delivery in accordance with the plans of the Department of Nursing, the mission of Copley Hospital, fiscal responsibility, management and leadership of staff, collaboration with medical staff, as well as maintaining working relationships with other hospital managers, and positive interaction with families, visitors, and vendors. The Nurse Director is accountable for continuous personal growth and development as well as encouraging and providing opportunities for staff to gain expertise. The Nurse Director possesses excellent interpersonal skills, problem identification and resolution abilities. The Nurse Director is responsible for meeting the standards set forth by CMS, other regulatory agencies and the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice. They will serve as an ambassador for the Copley Hospital while on and off duty. Compliance with all applicable State and Federal laws, regulations, and policies governing the provision of health care.


  • Acts as back-up to House Supervisor when required
  •  Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • This positions is responsible for : Acute Care Nursing Unit, Birthing Center, House Supervisors

Effectively Manage Human Resources:

  • Plan adequate staffing and adjustments on a daily basis, based on patient needs and staff skill mix.
  • Works with the department of nursing and the hospital to develop and maintain recruitment and retention strategies
  • Efficiently evaluate and manage performance of staff members, to include coaching and performance management processes as defined by Human Resources.
  • Encourage, support and provide as appropriate educational opportunities for staff development.
  • Manage the hiring process

Effectively Manage Department Operations:

  • Develop and maintain operational budget for the unit. Monitor patient revenues, expenses and operation expenses (salaries and capital) and provides required reports to administration.
  • Assure that the unit facilities and equipment meets necessary standards and monitors utilization of equipment. Managers Capital Planning and Budgets
  • In collaboration with support services, develop a plan to ensure a safe, clean and secure environment of care for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Support shared Governance by fostering an environment with open communication and assures decision making at the point of service. 
  • Assume accountability for continuous quality and regulatory management directives including TJC, OSHA, HCAHPS, CORE Measures, etc.

Ensure safe, effective efficient quality patient care:

  • Facilitate and monitor activities related to the delivery of patient care, assuring evidenced based practice and minimum nursing practice standards are achieved in the clinical area.
  • Monitors and assesses quality of services utilizing techniques including but not limited to, outcome monitoring and patient satisfaction. Assures that these mechanisms are in place to assess the patient’s responses to nursing interventions.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate unit and organizational policies, procedures and goals. Ensure that polices are consistent with the organization.
  • Responsible for patient flow processes.  Strategize to improve efficiency and eliminate barriers that affect patient and family centered care.
  • Collaborate with patients, families and the health care team to support and evaluate the patient plan of care and patient services

Support Education and Staff Development through participation and support of nursing research, education, informatics, quality and patient safety, and professional development:

  • Provide for professional growth and development of staff.
  • Facilitates the development of licensed and non-licensed nursing and health care personnel
  • Assume responsibility for the orientation of new staff.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Instructors in planning, implementation and evaluation of students’ clinical experience.
  • Collaborate with CNE and Nursing Committees to educate, train and develop staff to assure competency and provide professional growth and development.
  • Assists in the planning and development of appropriate educational programming to assure that staff maintain competency in their area of practice
  • Support and/ or participate in Evidenced Based Practice Projects and Nursing Research.


  • Actively leads/ and or participates in hospital governance committees, projects and programs. Ensure timely communication to the nursing leadership team and staff.
  • Assures that staff have an opportunity to attend committees, education programs and participate in projects through appropriate scheduling and notification
  • Assures that staff input is secured and considered in the planning process for clinical practice, QI projects, technology, and environment of care changes.
  • Communicates the plan to staff, develops, and modifies unit plans in response to changing internal and external factors.


  • Assume responsibilities for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.
  • Participate in hospital wide committees and/ or professional nursing organizations.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and act as a role model to staff.
  • Promotes environment that recognizes and rewards teamwork, creativity, personal and professional development and empowerment.


Education Required: 

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing(BSN or BS).


Education Desired:



Experience Required:

Minimum three years management experience in relevant clinical area. 3 years clinical nursing experience in specialty area.


Experience Desired:

EHR Implementation and interaction is beneficial.
Clinical- Knowledge and practice experience in telemetry, acute care, progressive care


License and Certification Requirements:

TNCC, BLS. ACLS and PALS within six months of employment.

Current Vermont Registered Nurse licensure in good standing with no restrictions or stipulations.


Skill Requirements:

  • The Nurse Director must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, problem identification and resolution abilities including independent problem solving.
  • Possesses the necessary skills to promote teamwork, has integrity, initiative and ability to foster growth in themselves as well as others

  • Business of Nursing Management; Leadership, Finance,  Quality, Development of Others, Communication and Human Resources
  • Must be able to demonstrate positive and collaborative physician and interdisciplinary team relationships
  • Able to back up the role of House Supervisor
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Products, use of technology in health care and have working knowledge  of clinical informatics.
