Under the direction of licensed nursing personnel, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) primary functions are to  assist in the basic care of patients requiring assistance with activities of daily living, mobility, and safety. Including acting as a patient sitter to provide direct, continuous observation of patients requiring same. She/he intervenes as necessary to prevent physical harm to patients who might be at high risk to injure themselves or others due to confusion, delirium, self-destructive behavior, or a high likelihood of falling. Works with others in the health care team to assure prompt intervention to maintain patient safety. Assists in the performance of procedures for the patient population served in a manner that is consistent with established policies and procedures. There is a potential opportunity for this to progress to a Nursing Assistant Training Program.

The core responsibilities of this role will fall under the following areas:


-Patient Sitter

  • Receives and reports information pertinent to the safety of the patient.
  • Provides consistent, direct observation of assigned patient(s).
  • Remains with patient at all times including when patient leaves room/unit for procedures or testing.
  • Intervenes when needed to prevent patient from harming self or others, calling for assistance immediately when necessary.

-Assisting in carrying out patient plan of care, providing for patient safety, comfort, and companionship as directed by the Registered Nurse. Maintain privacy, safety, dignity and confidentiality


-Assuring a safe environment, notifying Registered Nurse of concerns


-Assisting with basic ADL'S at the direction of an RN, OT, PT 

  • Provides for basic mobility;  up to chair if appropriate.
  • Assist with patient positioning
  • Aid with nutrition setup and feeding


  • Keeps nurse informed of patient condition changes or immediate problems
  • Utilizes positive communication and interpersonal skills in performance of duties




  • Completed third year of secondary schooling in good standing and on track to successful completion OR High School Diploma or equivalent 



  • Has demonstrated successful work experience.
  • Well- developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with medical staff, patients, family, visitors, and hospital staff under routine and stressful situations

License and Certification Requirements

  • BLS may be obtained within 3-months of hire.
