Director of Mansfield Orthopaedics

Mansfield Orthopaedics, located in Morrisville and Waterbury VT, is looking for a Director to join the team! The Director of Mansfield Orthopaedics provides strategic and operational leadership for the Mansfield Orthopaedics practice at Copley Hospital, with responsibility for patient access, referral management, scheduling, clinic operations, provider support, staffing, financial performance, and surgical throughput.

Working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, practice leadership, Perioperative Services, Finance, Revenue Cycle, Human Resources, IT, and other hospital departments, the Director develops and executes strategies that improve patient access, optimize clinical and surgical capacity, support high quality and patient-centered care, enhance patient clinical outcomes, improve the patient experience, and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the practice.

The Director establishes a data-driven, accountable operating environment by monitoring key performance indicators, identifying performance gaps, and leading sustained operational improvement. The Director serves as a key administrative partner to the Mansfield physician group, builds strong relationships with providers and staff, and leads workflow and organizational change.

The Director ensures compliance with hospital policies and applicable state and federal regulatory requirements.

This is a Full-Time position (PT options available) located in the Waterbury and Morrisville locations, as needed.

Compensation: $105,000-115,000/year.

The posted salary range reflects compensation for candidates with limited experience. An offer may vary based on factors such as experience, education, skills, internal equity, and market data. An offer of employment may be outside of the posted range based on those factors.

Practice Operations & Patient Access

• In conjunction with practice leadership, provides overall operational leadership for Mansfield Orthopaedics and establishes expectations for performance, accountability, communication, and patient service.
• Ensures effective integration of patient intake, telephone access, referral management, medical records, scheduling, clinic operations, surgical scheduling, and follow-up care.
• Develops and standardizes workflows to promote consistent, efficient operations across providers, locations, and staff.
• Maintains a visible leadership presence and works with providers and staff to identify and resolve operational barriers.
• Ensures staffing and resources are appropriately aligned with patient volume, provider schedules, and clinical demand.
• Oversees patient access and call-center performance, including telephone responsiveness, first-call resolution, scheduling outcomes, and patient experience.
• Ensures referrals are received, tracked, triaged, scheduled, and closed in a timely and consistent manner.
• Monitors access measures including referral aging, scheduling turnaround, new-patient access, cancellations, no-shows, and referral conversion.
• Leads implementation and adoption of new workflows, technology, and operational systems.

Clinic & Surgical Throughput

• Maintains oversight of the patient journey from referral through consultation, treatment, surgery, and follow-up.
• Monitors provider schedules, clinic capacity, utilization and develops strategies to minimize avoidable openings and improve patient access.
• Works collaboratively with physicians and Perioperative Services Director to optimize progression of surgical patients from clinic to the operating room.
• Monitors the surgical pipeline, surgical booking lead time, cancellations, OR/block utilization, and barriers affecting surgical throughput.
• Ensures clinic capacity, staffing, provider productivity, and surgical capacity are managed as an integrated operational continuum.

Performance & Data Management

• Establishes and maintains an operational dashboard for Mansfield Orthopaedics.
• Uses objective data and appropriate benchmarks to evaluate performance, establish priorities, and drive improvement.
• Monitors key measures including:
  • Patient access and call-center performance
  • Referral volume, aging, and conversion
  • Clinic and provider schedule utilization
  • Provider productivity, encounters, and wRVUs
  • Surgical pipeline and OR/block utilization
  • Patient experience
  • Staffing productivity
  • Revenue and expense performance
• Establishes performance targets, develops corrective action plans when needed, and regularly reports results to physicians and leadership.

Physician & Provider Relations

• Serves as a key administrative partner to Mansfield physicians and advanced practice providers.
• Develops collaborative relationships while maintaining clear expectations for operational performance and accountability.
• Provides providers with meaningful information regarding access, volume, productivity, schedule utilization, surgical activity, and financial performance.
• Identifies and removes operational barriers that interfere with efficient patient care and provider productivity.
• Supports provider recruitment, onboarding, retention, and integration into the practice.
• Partners with physicians and executive leadership on service-line planning, growth, and program development.

Financial & Business Management

• Develops and manages operating and capital budgets and monitors financial performance against budget.
• Monitors patient volume, provider productivity, staffing/FTE utilization, revenue, expenses, and other key financial indicators.
• Develops corrective actions when operational or financial performance varies materially from expectations.
• Evaluates staffing and resource utilization against workload, patient demand, productivity, and appropriate benchmarks.
• Participates in business planning and financial analysis for providers, programs, equipment, services, and growth initiatives.
• Collaborates with Finance and Revenue Cycle to optimize the financial performance and sustainability of the practice.

Employee Leadership

• Recruits, develops, evaluates, coaches, and manages staff in accordance with Copley Hospital policies.
• Establishes clear performance expectations and accountability for productivity, quality, teamwork, professionalism, and patient service.
• Develops manager, supervisors and emerging leaders and ensures appropriate delegation, cross-training, and succession planning.
• Promotes a culture of teamwork, transparency, continuous improvement, and shared accountability.
• Effectively leads staff through operational and organizational change through communication, engagement, training, and follow-through.

Patient Experience, Quality & Compliance

• Establishes and maintains patient-centered service expectations throughout the practice.
• Monitors patient experience and addresses significant patient concerns through appropriate investigation, resolution, and follow-up.
• Ensures timely and effective patient communication through referral, scheduling, clinical, and surgical processes.
• Collaborates with Quality and clinical leadership on patient safety and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Ensures compliance with hospital policies, documentation requirements, privacy standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Maintains readiness for applicable regulatory surveys and audits.

Strategic Planning & Growth

• Participates in strategic planning for Mansfield Orthopaedics and the broader orthopedic service line.
• Evaluates referral patterns, community demand, access, provider and surgical capacity, competitive factors, and financial performance to identify growth opportunities.
• Identifies opportunities to expand access, strengthen the continuum of musculoskeletal care, and appropriately grow clinical and surgical volume.
• Partners with Marketing and Community Relations to support practice and service-line growth.
• Develops implementation plans with measurable objectives, accountability, timelines, and performance indicators for major initiatives.

Other Duties

• Performs other duties, special projects, and assignments as requested by the Chief Operating Officer or executive leadership.

Education Required: 

• Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Management, Nursing, or related field

Education Desired: 

• Master's Degree in related field.

Experience Required:

• 5+ years of progressive healthcare management experience.
• Experience managing a sizeable physician practice, ambulatory, or similarly complex healthcare operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams and using operational and financial data to improve performance.
• Experience with referral management, scheduling, patient access, workflow redesign, and surgical practice operations.
